Chocolate Bread Pudding

From the kitchen of Shelby Oliver, Hamptonville

This is one of my husband’s favorites that his mother made when he was growing up. When we were married, she taught me how, and I’m still making it 41 years later.

2 cups milk (heated to scalding)
6 cups bread crumbs
1 stick margarine
1 3/4 cups sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten

Place bread crumbs in large mixing bowl. Cut margarine in chunks, place on top of crumbs, and pourhot milk over mixture. Cool. Add sugar, cocoa, vanilla, salt and eggs. Mix well and pour into buttered dish. Bake at 325 degrees  for 1 hour or until knife inserted comes out clean.
