The Midnight Rider
I had a black 1986 Jeep CJ-7 that I dubbed the Midnight Rider. Serving overseas in the US Air Force, I ordered my Jeep as I was about to finish an assignment in England. I took delivery of the vehicle in my home state of South Carolina, and the first thing I did was take it on a 1,000 mile trek through the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. For the next 17 years, the Midnight Rider accompanied me on every assignment, including nearly five years in The Netherlands where the Dutch drivers always thought my Jeep’s low beam headlights were on “high” and constantly flicked their headlights at me. Crisscrossing the United States twice and accumulating over 145,000 miles, I finally had to sell my favorite vehicle when I got an assignment to Washington, D.C., where parking spaces were at a premium.
