The Soup Can

In 1987 I was a young single woman in need of a newer car. I had been working at Arrow International in Asheboro and had saved $500. I had my eye on a pretty little red pre-owned 1982 Toyota Corolla/Tercel sitting on the big hill at Hunt’s Automotive priced at $2,995. I called my daddy, Bob Johnson, who at the time was the auto body repair instructor at Randolph Technical Community College. He cosigned a loan for me for the remaining balance, and I proudly drove off the lot that day in my “new” car. I paid off the loan in a year.

The next year I got married, and my husband and I went on our honeymoon to the mountains in our little red car we dubbed The Soup Can. Two years later we brought home our first child snuggly in the back seat. Today, 21 years and 200,000 miles later, we still drive it. It has had only two breakdowns with minimum repair. Our son, who had taken his first ride in it, just replaced the timing belt. You can frequently spot our favorite car on Dixie Drive in Asheboro. Give us a honk!
