The birthday card for Mom

My mother Ruth Sapp-Stamey loves to tell this story at family gatherings. It always brings a chuckle or two and reminds us kids of a fun time in our lives.

My brother Mike was 7 and the oldest of us kids. I was a year younger than he was and our baby sister Kim was 3. We were camping with our parents at Myrtle Beach. It was August, and my mother’s birthday was a day or two away. My father gave us kids some money and sent us to the candy stand at the campground to buy Mom a nice birthday card. None of us could read well, but we found a card with a nice picture and bought it for her. My brother signed it for all three of us.

When she opened it she laughed hysterically. The card read, “To a real swinging bachelor … Happy Birthday!”

Almost 40 years later, she still has the card.
