It's the Thought that Counts

From the uncle who stayed behind

When I was six, I was given a My Size Barbie for Christmas. I also got a plastic desk set and a little tape player. All the gifts were nice, especially the Barbie because I was a little Barbie freak. What I remember most were the gifts my Great-Uncle Terry gave me. Unlike all the expensive toys my family gave me, he gave me an old portable radio with a bent antenna, a mini dart board, a plastic doll and a bunch of other little toys they still sell at the Dollar Store.

I was always aware, even when I was young, that my uncle had been troublesome to the rest of the family, having been in and out of jail and other things. He was the only one in the family who stayed in West Virginia after the rest of us migrated to North Carolina. His gift was all he could give and far more than I could have asked of him. When I was young, I held on to that little radio because it was cool. Now I still have it to remind me that it’s the thought that counts.
