Socks, dishpan, bowls
I married Sherwood “Snook” Lunsford in 1955. We moved in with his grandmother, Florence Oakley, in the Mt. Harmony section of Person County. Snook worked at Lee Dye Co. in Butner earning less than a dollar an hour.
Snook stopped every morning and afternoon at Mangum’s store in Moriah. On our anniversary he came home so excited; he had me a gift. Baxter, who owned the store, had reduced the price on a pack of socks he had on display in the window. Snook bought them for me. It didn’t make any difference that one side of each pair had faded. I wore those socks!
A couple of months later on my birthday, I got another gift. Baxter had reduced the price on a red plastic dishpan with two little plastic bowls in it. That was my birthday present. It didn’t make any difference that the dish pan was split down the side.
Snook passed away in 1998 after 43 years of marriage. We laughed many times about the “dumb” gifts. When I think about it today: at least he remembered.
