Tending the babies

The best thing about growing up on a farm was all the babies that were born in the spring time. There were baby chicks, piglets, calves, turkeys, puppies and kittens. Always some would get injured or abandoned and needed nursing back to health. That job was given to me. I brought the smaller ones in the house, put them in boxes or tubs, fed them from medicine droppers. Chicks had corn meal from the palm of my hand. The turkeys were given buttermilk, corn meal and cut onions. I held, rocked and rubbed the piglets’ tummies and played with and petted all the babies. Soon they grew and were put outside. They would follow me all over the yard begging for food, love and affection.

Sometimes I would get a baby sister or brother who had to be fed, rocked and played with. I gave love and kindness to all.
