Growing up faster

Growing up on a farm teaches you discipline. Most of the farm animals’ livelihood depends on you. Every morning I was always up at 5. When you got up you had to feed the cow, horse, chickens and rabbits before you even had breakfast yourself.

Breakfast consisted of eggs we got from the chickens and Grandma’s buttermilk biscuits. She made them with lard and sifted her own flour. We grew almost everything we ate and a lot of our fresh meat came from the hunt.

I can remember the cold winter nights when we depended on heat from our wood stove. I was 16 when we got hot water and indoor plumbing.

Growing up on a farm had its challenges, but it taught me a lot and I grew up faster. Overall I think I’m better for it.
