Less is more
On the farm we lived by the philosophy “less is more.” I don’t think we even knew that’s what we did. When the furnace broke and there was a foot of snow outside, we learned to keep a fire stoked and that body heat would keep us warm. No amount of complaining would fix the furnace, so that wasn’t even an option. All we could do was figure out what needed to happen next and work towards it. It seemed there was always something that we had to work around, but we did and most times we were better off for it.
In a world of “more is still not enough” I find myself continuing to revert back to the “less is more” theory. I may have had fewer toys, fewer new clothes, fewer new gadgets than my friends, but what I know now is that it prepared me better for life. Living on the farm and having to make do with what we had - and didn’t have - has made me a more appreciative and resourceful person today.
