During a visit to Statesville last December, I found my mother-in-law, Elaine Templeton Williams, and her friend, Mattie Snow, chopping, mixing and baking fruitcakes of all sizes and shapes—about 20 of them on that day. The house was filled with the most delicious aroma.  You can’t get that in a scented candle!  Elaine starts preparing the fruit several weeks ahead of baking. Her fruitcakes are a tradition around northern Iredell County, a tasty gift that friends and neighbors look forward to at Christmas.

From left are Mattie Snow, my grandson, Torren Mayr (then three months old) and Torren’s great-grandma Elaine Williams.
