"Hey! What happened
last night?"
This is a true story, told by our neighbor,
that happened many, many years ago.
We visited them often, and I always enjoyed
their stories of older times. Her family then lived on a farm in
Lee County. They grew lots of grapes. Each year when the jelly had
all been made, her mother would take the grapes and make juice.
One day she called the children to take a
churn full of juice that had fermented and told them to pour it
out. They took the fermented juice and poured it in a ditch.
The family also raised lots of geese and picked
part of their feathers each year to make pillows and feather beds.
The geese got in the ditch and drank the fermented
wine. Later that day, the children found the geese "dead"
in the yard. They ran and told their mother, and she was horrified
that her geese were dead.
She and the children picked off ALL their
feathers and threw the geese in the woods. The next morning there
they were, very much alive and not a feather on them! They had passed
out drunk. She said it was the funniest sight they had ever seen!
