My piece of heaven
Both my parents had a “green
thumb.” Mom would pull
up flowers and throw them across the fence and they would bloom
in the pasture! I can’t keep a cactus alive. When I lost
both parents to cancer, I thought I would never see their beautiful
flower gardens again.
Every year, I nagged my husband, Tony, to
plant a garden. He farms and said he didn’t have time to
garden. Finally, last summer, he relented. I was so excited I announced
I wanted a rock walkway. He smiled and said I could lay it. What
could be so hard about laying rock?
By July, I was taking three
Aleve a day for back pain, but I had a spectacular walkway and
garden. Neighbors honked their horns to encourage me and stopped
to see our progress. Tony got excited and added his ideas and kept
my garden alive.
One morning as the fog lifted, I sat on my
rock steps looking at the flowering beauty. As the sun peeked through
the clouds, on my little piece of heaven, I could see my parents
looking down smiling and saying, “You go, girl!”
