If I Were Governor of North Carolina...

Build good citizens

I would start a rehabilitation program for ex-offenders. Prisoners would be scheduled to do volunteer work in their community upon their release. The service they would render would be determined by the crime they committed. For example, if a man committed vehicular manslaughter, he would volunteer at a funeral home or a morgue, or attend autopsies of murder victims. If a woman stole a car, she would work at a body shop and would have to live without a car for at least six months. If a prisoner earned a college degree while incarcerated, then he or she would volunteer several hours a year in a field related to what they studied. Ex-offenders should bear the consequences of their crimes in a constructive manner once they are outside of prison walls.

During my tenure in office, I would also mandate one Good Citizen Award be issued each month. Law abiding residents of North Carolina should be highly valued by governmental leaders because they make our democratic society successful.
