North Carolina roots

I am a father, grandfather and now a great-grandfather. Twenty-five years ago, I left the hills of northwestern New Jersey to enjoy the waterways of eastern North Carolina. These have been great years boating and golfing in this beautiful area. I have friends among native North Carolinians and those who chose to move here. If I ever heard “Yankee,” it was in good fun.

A few years ago while on the way to attend a WWII ship reunion in Ohio, I passed an area where some of my forbears had lived. Upon examining the local cemetery, there they were – my grandmother’s grandparents. John Jones, born Feb.1, 1803 (died Feb. 20, 1859) and Eleanore Austin Jones born Oct. 24, 1805 (died Sept. 6, 1882).

What was important to them was carved on the stone after their names and before their birthdates: “Born in N.C.”

I didn’t know this about my great-great grandparents, but I now can claim North Carolina lineage, a full circle in 200 years.
