Dreaming of a wet Christmas
It was December 2002, and the house was decorated for the family gathering on the 25th. Or so I thought.
A few days before Christmas and while I was out of town, the unexpected happened. Unbeknownst to my two grown sons who lived at home, the hose on the washing machine burst during the night. You want to guess how much water can spew out over a period of four to five hours? What about how it feels to set your sleepy feet down on completely soaked carpet? I received a phone call with the frantic announcement that every room on the lower level of the house was covered with an inch of water.
Skipping the details, I can tell you I arrived in Lexington several days later to celebrate Christmas in a house with bare concrete floors downstairs, most of the furniture relocated in no particular order upstairs, all the holiday decorations in shambles, and the kitchen so full of extra stuff that just opening the refrigerator door was a challenge. But hey—we just moved our family fun to my daughter’s and her husband’s little apartment, and life went on in a wonderful way.
