Band-Aids
During my long career as a house carpenter,
I always carried Band-Aids in my toolbox. They would surely be
needed.
Once
I was sawing a heavy piece of timber with an electric hand circular
saw. I already knew that the blade guard sometimes did not go
back as it should. Something happened that made the saw kick back
and as luck would have it, the saw guard did not go back. It all
happened in a split second. I saw the blade turning at full speed,
coming straight toward my stomach. Lucky me, I was wearing a nail
apron full of 16 penny nails that choked the blade instantly.
Then
in 1973, the real horror happened. I failed to install a set
of folding stairs properly. Two years later, the homeowner was
going up the steps when it fell, crashing to the floor and breaking
both of his legs.
I
still believe carpenters should carry Band-Aids, but it takes
more than Band-Aids for two broken legs.
