Knowing scripture
Ever since our two oldest children
were preschoolers, my husband has been memorizing scripture with
them. As soon as he heard them sing the words to “Do-Re-Mi,” he
said they were old enough to learn verses. At first when they were
small, he would chase them around the dining room table and they
would shout out verses. Later they would sit on the sofa and recite.
The more they learned, the faster and easier it was for them
to memorize. Soon they started learning passages.
A relative
suggested that we shouldn’t have those children
memorizing what they don’t understand. I soon learned that
they understood more than we knew.
One day I was racing around the
kitchen frantically, muttering about everything I had to do. As
usual, I had scheduled too many activities and commitments for
my young family. I didn’t
know how I was going to get everything done and I was stressed.
My 8-year-old daughter, Jessie, observed me for a few minutes,
then quietly said, “You know Mama, the Bible says, ‘Who
of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?’” (Matt.
6:27). Her words stopped me in my tracks. I now knew that she understood
the scripture. She had correctly applied it to life, and I was
being lovingly rebuked. It was definitely a humbling experience.
