Lights Out: What we did when we lost electric power

Throwing a party

During the December 2002 ice storm, we awoke to a cold and dark house. My husband, Dean, and I went to work but soon discovered power was out almost everywhere, including our workplace. We came home and built a fire to keep warm. My mom sat by that fireplace all day.

Our thoughts quickly turned to water, food and power. We found two lanterns and a coffeepot from a previous Cape Lookout camping trip. We were so thankful we had kept them and some extra batteries, too. Some of our family brought us water to drink and cook with.

That evening my friend Martha, Dean’s parents, my sister and her family came over to eat with us. Dean cooked a big pot of chicken, pork chops, polish kielbasa and rice. We also had sliced tomatoes, onions and loaf bread. A lantern hanging over the table was our light. Later, we laughed and talked over fruitcake and coffee.

My brother-in-law once said, “Benfields would make a party out of anything.” We had a good time but were not disappointed the next afternoon when our power was restored.
