How to Live a Long Life

Tend a garden

When I think of someone who has lived a long and happy life, I think of my friend Carmel Gore.

A southern lady, she lives in a little house surrounded by beautiful flowerbeds and gardens of every description. She has always loved to work outdoors and still tries to do her own yard work even though she now uses a walker. The other day while visiting, we talked about her approaching birthday. Her gorgeous blue eyes, silver hair and slim figure belied the fact that she would be 90 years old. Somehow our conversation drifted to the subject of heaven.

Wanting to encourage her I said, "Ms. Carmel, I feel certain that the Lord will have a beautiful garden up there--just for you." Her immediate response helped me understand why she has lived such a long and happy life.

"If he does," she said emphatically with a twinkle in her eye, "I sure do hope He'll give me a hoe!"
