If you want to know how to live a
long and happy life, just ask my mother, Marshall Ledford of Newport.
She is in her 80s and can still run rings around me. She makes
stained glass, is an expert quilter, has a full woodworking shop,
sews and alters for everyone, and—in her spare time—she
cooks, does all her own housework and cuts her grass with a push
lawnmower. When we’re out of town, she comes over and takes care
of our house and pets, too. She is healthy and trim and takes no
medication of any kind.
How does she do it? First of all, she always
has a pleasant outlook and a positive attitude. She never dwells
on the negatives in life and is uplifting to all around her. Secondly,
she reads the Bible every day and is active in her church. Thirdly,
she has enviable health habits: she doesn’t drink, doesn’t
smoke, eats little meat and lots of fruits and vegetables and consumes
a gallon of milk every three days. Lastly, she is "other-centered”—always
eager to do something for a friend or family member with no wish
or expectation of receiving anything in return.
I think she has
found the recipe. Edith W. Mason
