Albert Gaskill is amazing. Born October
10, 1910, in Beaufort, he will turn 93 this fall. He is still playing
tennis and is on the scene of local junior tournaments and high
school matches to cheer on young players.
He had three goals as
a youth playing tennis on the old basketball court in Beaufort:
1) go to UNC, 2) have a wife and family, and 3) join a service
club, like Rotary. He achieved all three and more.
He got an accounting
degree from UNC in 1943, served on the faculty there for six years,
and then taught at Campbell College for 12 years. He served as
a public accountant until 1977, when he became a self-described "tennis
bum." He has
played in tennis tournaments from Boston to Florida up until this
year.
Albert
attributes his longevity and good health to good eating habits
and taking care of himself. He doesn't drink or smoke, eats tons
of vegetables, walks, plays tennis and stays active. He also
tries to do at least one good deed every day and encourages and
inspires many young tennis players. I think he is a great role
model.
