The man in the picture
I was working in a restaurant
in Fayetteville and in came a young man holding his enlarged army
picture. I asked to see it. He gave it to me, and I wouldn’t
give it back.
Later he came back. I served him his lunch.
Then I gave his picture back. We got to talking and went on a trip.
He was 22, I was 19. That picture brought us together. It was love
at first sight.
We went together for a month. Then he wanted
to marry me. That was it. We rode on a bus to South Carolina. We
had to stay overnight. He rented two rooms. The next evening we
got married on June 14, 1947.
We moved to White Oak and lived happily
ever after. The sad part is he died June 3, 2007. I still live
here. He was from Sampson County. His name was Talmadge. He was
a World War II veteran.
