My Money Pit

The special offer and those college years

Throughout my life I’ve witnessed and have been an active participant in an embarrassing number of scams, worthless purchases and bad financial decisions. Two incidents stand out as the biggest waste of money I can remember.

Soon after I got my first credit card, I ended up on the list of every telemarketer in the USA. I was so excited that the telemarketers actually wanted to talk to me and not my parents, that I jumped at the opportunity to charge $500 for the “once-in-a-lifetime offer” of a 3D camera, some “bonus” beauty products and some “free” trip vouchers. When my parents found out I fell for this scam, I was so embarrassed that I pushed it under my bed and never used any of it.

Surprisingly, the absolute biggest money pit I’ve managed to get myself into is my college student loans. I’m a stay-at-home mother of one with another on the way, and all I can say is that my 4.5 years at Kent State University were the most expensive party that I’ve ever been to. I’ll be paying for it until the year 2013!
