How I Got My Name

Cecelia didn't last

I am the oldest of seven children. When I was about 10 years old, I began to complain about the simple three-letter name my parents had given me, because my siblings all had long, beautiful names: Katherine, Lawrence, Michelle. At about that age, when I was very dissatisfied with my name, I found out that my Aunt Gene's full name was Genevieve Cecilia, and I longed to have such a melodious name. I made my family call me Cecilia for about a week until my mother told me why I had the name I did.

It was quite simple, really. My dad was so overjoyed to have a baby daughter as his firstborn child that he named me Joy to define his delight. I've been happy with my short little name ever since.
