A neighbor who felt like family

Phyllis Spence and I became neighbors in
1986. We lived in Davidson County and also attended the same church.
I
had a three-year-old son who immediately wrapped Phyllis around
his little
finger. They were great buddies and he stayed with her almost every week while
I did my errands.
Her house was what I imagined it would be
like to live in a dollhouse. Phyllis had candy hidden in every
room and in the basement
were crafts of every kind.
Each Christmas, she decorated every room in a different theme and had a tree
in each room, even the bathrooms weren’t forgotten! Phyllis had a homemade
pound cake in her kitchen at all times, and we enjoyed countless hours in her
swimming pool.
Phyllis and I worked in the music department
at our church. I assisted her in the puppet shows by playing the
piano. Once we were going to a school
to do a
puppet presentation and we had everything loaded in the car, including my son,
who locked us out! It took several minutes to get him to unlock the door, since
he had the car keys inside! We laughed and laughed, but made it in time.
We
were neighbors only two short years when my family moved to Raleigh.
I’ve
never known another neighbor who felt more like family than Phyllis.
