Cassie, my guide through life

Cassie’s palace is wherever we are together. She and I met on April 21, 2004, at Southeastern Guide Dogs International in Palmetto, Fla. Cassie is a yellow lab who adores and worships me unconditionally. She became a guide dog because of her intelligence, her loyalty and a desire to please and obey commands. Cassie has learned and uses 42 commands as we travel through life.

Cassie allows me to do things that otherwise would not happen, such as obtaining a bachelor’s degree in May 2008 from High Point University. Losing one’s eyesight is a challenge, but sharing a palace with Cassie makes life easier and more enjoyable. Eyesight is something people take for granted. I know I did at one time. Cassie has given me back some of my independence. She has given me the gift of mobility allowing us to “share that palace.”

So, where is Cassie’s palace? She is surrounded by her palace at all times. Her job, her focus and joy in life is serving her owner. Her palace is wherever we may need to go, maybe college, the doctor, restaurants and the mall. Believe it or not, Cassie loves to ride on escalators.
