Dixie, the foot warmer

Our children had begged for a dog for over a year, but my husband and I decided that it would be best to wait until after his deployment before we brought a new four-legged friend to our house. In the meantime, we encouraged the children to pray about the right pet for us, especially our 8-year-old son, Joel, who desired a dog the most. He was focused on getting a hunting dog for a pet, a desire which was not shared by me or his father.

Deployment time came and went, and we suddenly found ourselves in the market for a dog. We searched the local SPCAs and found none that seemed to be the “right” dog. We ended up with disappointed children. One day a friend mentioned that his daughter had rescued a dog from being killed because it was a poor hunting dog, and it was in need of a good home. We took one look at Dixie and knew the beagle/Jack Russell terrier doggie was for us, even if she was a mix of breeds we vowed to stay far away from! She fit right in to our family and immediately took a special liking to Joel.
Her “palace” is now anywhere that Joel is, and she is especially fond of plopping on his bed each night, as you can see from the photo. She will trot in there each night, uncalled, knowing her palace is waiting and will reappear sometime the next morning. Joel has even placed her doggie bed at the foot of his bed. He loves the fact that she has her own bed, and he has a foot warmer. She’s spoiled rotten.

Everyone is happy about Dixie living in her new palace, especially Joel because he got his “hunting” dog.
