Flatlanders in the mountains

When I was 10 years old our family of eight went to Colorado, our first trip together. My youngest two sisters were still in diapers.

The first night we set up our tent and later awoke to crashes of thunder and soaked bedding. While setting up our tent the next time among beautiful pine trees, we thought we heard a train coming. Suddenly our father yelled, “To the car!” and golf size hail pelted down, with a deafening sound, nearly breaking our windshield.

Next, we spent a lovely day at a mountaintop zoo. Fortunately, despite our pleas, Father delayed our next plan to see colored lights at the nearby Seven Falls, because that very evening a flash flood stranded everyone at the falls in the dark, cold rain, drowning many of the zoo animals and washing away some cars and people.

If that wasn’t enough, we were backing out of a mountainside driveway when our father commanded, “Don’t move!” His voice froze us. He carefully changed gears and we felt the car wobble and rocks sliding, and then our back tire moved back up onto solid ground. We had been hanging over a drop-off!

Later, we viewed an awesome triple rainbow and thanked God for the beauty of His creation and for His guardian angels.
