Stranded near the Pee Dee River

One day in July 1997, my mother, brother, his wife and I took a drive on a remote little road out near the Pee Dee River. We had driven about 10 miles when our car had a flat tire. Horrors! The spare would not release from its holder! We were stranded and in real trouble.

That day the temperature soared to above 104 degrees. Mom had a heart problem, and I was very concerned about her and our situation. There was not a house or shelter near us. All we could do was pray that a car would come by.

About 45 minutes passed until a man allowed us to flag him down. The man took my brother to a phone where he called for a wrecker. As there was no address to give the dispatcher, he could only describe where we were. We prayed we would be found.

Two hours passed before the wrecker came. The driver told us he had given up when he, by chance, saw this little road.

After that day, I bought emergency road service insurance and installed a phone in my car. If I ever have a similar situation, hopefully, I will be able to summon help.
