The fly-away rooftop carrier

It was Christmas week 1999. We were traveling north to see family. We drove a 1994 Mustang that was jam-packed with my husband, myself and our year-old daughter, not to mention tons of gifts and clothes. We had so much stuff that we borrowed a car-top carrier from a friend. We were driving through the night to avoid heavy traffic.

Going up I-77, just before Statesville, the car-top carrier took flight and crashed behind us. In horror we exited and doubled back. When we arrived at the mess, a car had stopped and we feared our carrier hit it.

As it turned out, a kind man from Statesville saw what happened and stopped to wait for us. He simply wanted to help. He and my husband re-mounted the carrier on our car and recovered as many gifts as possible. The man even offered to give us his cell phone since we didn’t have one. We declined and thanked him.

After securing the carrier to the roof with rope and a lot of duck tape – yes we looked like hillbillies – we continued on our way, thankful for the man with the generous spirit.
