Driving with morning coffee

Getting in our 1983 two-door, brown-and-white Plymouth Fury to go to work, I had a hot cup of coffee with me to drink on my way to the office. As I backed out of the carport in a rush, I spilled the hot liquid on me and jumped out of the car to get away from the spill. The only problem was I forgot to put the car in park. The vehicle kept going in reverse with the door wide open. It headed for our pump house. I tried to jump back in to stop the sedan, but could not. Only seconds before the open door slammed into the pump house, I jumped away from the car.

My husband was also leaving in his truck and saw the whole horror. He said he knew I was going to be crushed to death between the door and pump house, and there was nothing he could do.

I thank God daily for saving my life. I know not to drink hot coffee on the way to work and to slow down even if I am late.
