Listening to mom and dad
It was 1988 and I was a junior in high school. North Carolina was just starting to require seatbelt use. My mom and dad always buckled up and would remind me when I would leave to do the same.
On the day before Mother’s Day, I was going shopping. I got in my car and headed up the road, needless to say, without my seatbelt. After stopping for gas, I was on my way again. Down the road, I kept hearing my mom’s voice saying, “Put on your seatbelt.” Something told me that I better listen this time.
When I came to a stop sign, I reached for my belt and snapped it into place. Less than five minutes later I was run off the road, lost control and flipped my car. I received only moderate injuries, but according to the trooper working the accident, if I hadn’t been wearing my seatbelt I would have been killed.
I just thank God that I listened to that voice that day, and I’m here today to tell this story.
