In the British Isles
In 2004, I went on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the United Kingdom. I was in a student ambassador program called People To People, where I would be thousands of miles away from my family, traveling to different countries on my own. For a 12-year-old, that can be an amazing and terrifying experience. Forty other students and I met members of England’s parliament, explored Ireland’s vast forests and waterfalls, and repelled off castle walls in Wales.
At one point on our trip we stayed with a couple of families to experience daily life in their world. The family I stayed with had a son and two daughters, one of which was my age. I found that we had a lot in common, including a love for horseback riding. During the trip I made many friends, including a couple I still keep in touch with today. I think the most I got out of the trip was a respect for different cultures and love for the place I live in today. When I got off the plane, home safe and sound in North Carolina, I couldn’t have been any happier.
