One time…at Summer Camp

Those older girls

In the summer of 1959, I was hired at a girls camp as a dance counselor. I was also in charge of a cabin of eight 15-year-olds, who were at the limits of this kind of camp experience but not old enough to be counselors. Being only 19 myself and with no camp experience, I didn’t bring a lot of clout.

Each day they found ways to skip activities and slip back to the cabin where they tried out make-up and hair styles and read fashion and movie magazines. I knew where they were. But many nights found me waking up to search the woods with a flashlight. I found them laughing and telling secrets and herded them back to the cabin. Then one night I didn’t wake up. The next morning the whole camp was summoned to the shore to watch 25 camp boats drifting in the middle of the lake. I had a good idea what had happened, but I couldn’t prove it.

The last two weeks of camp, Lanie Kazan, a former camper, came from New York to direct the camp version of “My Fair Lady.” All my girls were given big parts. They worked with me each day to perfect their dance routines. Exhausted, they crashed at night, and I did, too. We ended up great friends. Even so, the next year I requested 10-year-olds.
