Fixing the air conditioner

Back in the mid-1960s we had a big Frigidaire window air conditioner in my bedroom running on 110 volts. For some strange reason (I believe it was blowing fuses), I took it upon myself to see if the air conditioner would run better plugged into the outlet in the main bathroom down the hall. Being the ripe old age of 12 or 13, I was not aware of wire gage, amperage, and the heat associated with the two. I found three lightweight extension cords, ran them down the hall to the A/C and plugged them all in.

Then came the bright move: I turned on the A/C. A large pop sound ensued, along with the smell of burnt rubber and smoke wafting down the hall. Of course the fuse blew, which I replaced promptly. I threw the melted cords away, and thank God the house did not catch fire. Mom and Dad never knew how close we were to losing the house.
