Once Upon a Time in the Wild

Wild boar in Wake County

I actually saw two wild boar in 1997 in Wake County. It was summer and I was coming home from work on a quiet Sunday morning. My routine trip became not-so-routine when I came over the crest of a hill near the Falls Lake reservoir. There in the road — and taking up the entire road — were two wild boar, tusks and all. They appeared to be fighting and apparently I was not invited. I had little reaction time going 55 mph, so all I could do was slam the brakes on my pickup and bounce off the road in the grass to avoid them. One ran off and the other one spun around to challenge me. I bounced back onto the road and kept on going and have not seen any more boar to this day.

People are amazed that such a wild animal could be so close to Raleigh, but remember that the Falls Lake area is bordered by thousands of acres of protected forest land. Who knows what other critters are living in them?
