Trees in the Landscape

An important element in landscape composition, trees are used for various design purposes. A dominant and permanent feature of the landscape, many trees together make a background for structure and for more intimate details. Individual trees may be accents in the design or incidental notes. By their shapes, trees express and accent line as well as mass. Many trees produce flowers in profusion, which gives the garden picture greater scale and variety, as well as richness in color. Many trees are also adorned with ornamental fruit. In others, the foliage turns glorious colors in autumn. Some have picturesque branches and trunks, which are especially interesting in winter. Certain mature trees become living legends, lasting from generation to generation.
