Is your yard wildlife-worthy? Does your garden provide food, water, shelter and nesting habitat for birds and other wildlife? Do you conserve water or use other eco-friendly practices? You might qualify to be recognized as a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat. The NWF hosts the program to recognize homeowners who create wildlife habitats in their yards and gardens. The requirements include some simple, everyday contributions you may already be making in your garden, such as providing feeders, birdbaths, nesting boxes, shrubs, and wildflowers or using rain barrels and composting yard waste and kitchen scraps. To see how you measure up, visit www.nwf.org/backyard, e-mail info@nwf.org or call 1-800-822-9919. For a registration fee of $15, you’ll receive a certificate, NWF membership and magazine subscription, and your name will be entered in a national registry of certified habitats. You can also purchase an attractive, weatherproof “Certified Wildlife Habitat” sign to show off your commitment. |
