Container-grown plants
Clay pots usually are more attractive than plastic
ones. But plastic pots retain moisture better. To get the best of both,
slip a plastic pot into a slightly larger clay pot. Clay pots are easy
to paint if following a color scheme. It's safest to avoid small containers;
they often can't store enough water to carry the plants through hot days.
To
improve drainage, place about an inch of coarse gravel in the bottom
of the container with liquid fertilizer, following directions on the
label. An occasional application of fish emulsion or compost will add
trace elements to container soil. Place containers where they will
receive maximum sunlight and good ventilation. If necessary in dark rooms,
give plants extra light with fluorescent tubes. Watch for and control
insect pests that may be over-wintering indoors. top
