Propagation by Layering
Here’s a propagation by layering method for
the spring and summer months, often used to reproduce azaleas. For woody
branches, cut a notch about 18 inches from the tip. Then, prop the cut
open with a wooden match or a very small piece of wood, and bend the branch
over the ground. Cover the notch with soil and remove leaves from the
buried portion. The tips of each branch are left exposed. If necessary,
hold the branch down with a forked stick or by using the weight of a small
stone. After the layer has rooted, it may be severed from the parent plant.
When the new plant is well established, it may be transplanted the following
spring
