Gourd Rewards

Wondering what to do with those gourds you dried last year (or will harvest this fall)? Mark your calendar for the 64th Annual North Carolina Gourd Festival, Sept. 10-11, in Dorton Arena at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. The event features competition in 90 categories for growers and crafters, including birdhouse crafts, most unusual gourd, musical instruments and wearable gourds. Painters, carvers and jewelry makers will sell their wares, and gourd artisans will lead workshops on how to make crafts with gourds. For information, e-mail harryhurley@hotmail.com or write the society at 259 Fletcher Ave., Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526-9801.
