Vegetables: plant your favorites

Where space is limited, plan carefully how much of each crop will be needed in the kitchen. Family favorites will naturally get the most attention. Four to six well-grown and cared for plants can produce all the fruit an average family can use.

If eggplants and bell peppers are among family favorites, plant two or three plants of each. They take up relatively little space and bear until frost. If space allows, you might want to include plantings of pole or bush snapbeans, or lima beans, okra, summer and winter squash, southern peas, cucumber, cantaloupe and watermelon. And don’t forget sweet corn.
