The annual Portulaca (moss rose), with its fleshy, succulent foliage and brightly hued flowers, faces heat and drought with grace. The similar-looking hardy ice plant (Delosperma cooperi), topped with hot-pink flowers, also performs well on dry, sunny slopes.
