Longer Life For Cut Flowers
Slowing down bacterial
growth in the water in a vase will help prolong the life of blooms used
in floral designs. If you change the water
daily, place blooms in cool (not cold) fresh water. Commercial preparations
available in garden centers and florist shops are a great help. Keep
them out of reach of small children. One-half a teaspoon of Clorox
mixed in a quart of water helps prevent bacteria from forming. Boric
acid, mixed by the same amount, is an aid. An old Norwegian formula
that has been effective for generations: Dissolve six level teaspoons
sugar and one tablespoon vinegar in five cups warm water. Use in cut
flower containers. Plants take up warm water faster than they do in
cold water. With this formula, it’s not necessary to change water
daily. Never use sugar alone as a preservative for cut flowers. top |
