Planting Bulbs for Spring

If not already planted, get a jump start on sowing spring bulbs like narcissus, wood hyacinths and crocus. To make planting easier, consider building raised beds if your soil is composed of heavy clay. Plant large bulbs 6-to-8 inches deep and small bulbs 3-to-6 inches deep. For a dramatic visual effect, plant in groups of 25; mixing and matching varieties and colors. Properties with large areas of lawn can incorporate a “bulb meadow.” A bulb meadow should not be mowed until after the bulb foliage ripens.

Since rotting is a danger, water bulbs with care. Water at planting time and then avoid watering again in winter. When bulbs are in full growth, they need approximately 1⁄2 inch of water per week. If rain is not adequate, water accordingly.

When cutting flowers for floral designs, cut very little foliage. Good foliage growth promotes healthy bulbs for next year.

As blooms begin to wilt, snap off the seed heads unless you are hybridizing or propagating species from seed.
