The Will of Willows

Here’s an old saying about willows that rings true: “Lovely to look at, graceful and grand, but if you’re careful, they’ll get out of hand.” There are several species that will grow virtually anywhere in the United States. Although shallow-rooted, willows produce masses of roots that anchor them well in most locations. A very picturesque tree near a pond or lake, willows thrive in moist soil. Roots will sometimes enter cracks in septic lines and tanks, eventually causing problems.
