Start thinking about springtime planting

Since gardening is a year-round project, when weather prevents outdoor activities, spend time indoors planning spring projects.

  • Plant beans outdoors anytime after last frost.
  • Plant broccoli six to eight weeks before the last spring frost.
  • Celery should be planted indoors six to eight weeks before frost.
  • Start half-hardy carrot seeds outdoors four to six weeks before last spring frost.
  • Plant cauliflower seeds indoors six to eight weeks before the last spring frost, or plant them outdoors four weeks before last frost.
  • Hardy onion sets should be planted outdoors four weeks before the last frost.
  • Summer squash is very tender, and seeds should be started indoors three to four weeks before last frost.
  • Pepper seeds are very tender and should be started indoors eight to ten weeks before last spring frost.
  • Plant corn outside two weeks after the last frost.
  • Peppers are very tender and need a minimum soil temperature of 70 to 80 degrees F to germinate outdoors. Start seed indoors eight to ten weeks before last spring frost.
  • Peas are hardy. Start seeds outdoors four to six weeks before the last frost.
  • Plant tender potato tubers outdoors two to four weeks before last spring frost.
  • Hardy radishes and spinach do well when planted outdoors four to six weeks before last frost.
