Hort Shorts

  • November and December are perfect times to plant dormant shrubs and trees. In winter and early spring, the plant’s energy is focused on healthy root development.
  • Sow annual seeds of poppy, love-in-a-mist, larkspur, and bachelor’s button directly in the garden for spring bloom.
  • Mulch strawberries with 3 to 6 inches of pine needles or straw.
  • To protect from freezing, keep garden hoses and nozzles drained.
  • Remove spent flowers from pansies to encourage new bloom. Remove and discard any yellowed or diseased leaves.
