Winter lawn care

Emerald zoysia is well adapted to the Deep South. It’s fast-growing, fine in texture, deep green in color and makes a most attractive turf. It is tolerant of shade, and under favorable conditions it becomes established rapidly. You can also grow it successfully further north.

Organic matter greatly improves soil. Take care to avoid adding high-carbon material such as sawdust, which can create nitrogen deficiencies. If you do add sawdust, also add either nitrogen fertilizer or well-decayed manure to speed decomposition and restore a healthy balance of nitrogen. Overseed warm-season grasses such as zoysia, centipede or Bermuda with annual rye grass for winter color. Seed early before tree leaves begin to fall.
