Look and plan ahead

Now’s the time to make decisions regarding changes to improve the overall landscape of your garden. Check all trees and evergreen shrubs to determine if any need removing due to die-back. Prepare a simple drawing of buildings and surrounding yard areas. Indicate windows and their exposures to determine the locations of indoor gardens for a source of sunlight.

You might spend indoor time during cold and rainy spells studying garden catalogs and placing orders for plants you’d like to get. Sometimes supply houses sell out early, so it’s wise to get orders in the mail. Many local nurseries and garden centers reduce prices in autumn, clearing shelves for winter supplies.
